Komera Project

As you may know the District currently has links with Rwanda. Initially they
were working to raise money for an Isolation ward at the hospital in Kibogora
(Sarah's walk previously on this website). Having raised the amount needed it
is now planned to concentrate efforts on raising money for PHARP (Peace,
Healing and Reconciliation Project). Further information about PHARP
can be found on: http://www.pharp.org/index.html
The PHARP activities involve training leaders from youth groups, women and
pastores who in turn will reach out to those in the churches and communities.
The main purpose is to promote and create dialogue where those from
different ethnic groups (Hutu and Tutsi) can begin to share experiences and
sufferings thereby generating a shared understanding. The programme now
being offered includes teaching, peace advocacy and counselling. At the
moment the project works from temporary accommodation and funds being
raised will go towards building seminar and training rooms, along with a guest
house for those attending courses.
This summer a group of young people from the District have been given the
opportunity to visit the area and see the work taking place. Alongside that
they are planning to work with the young people in the area. Sarah and Jane
Timms have been offered a place to join them. The group leave from the UK
on 19 July and return on 9 August. The three weeks spent there will be
working with orphans from the genocide - teaching them life skills and helping
them with their English, working with some HIV Aids children and also helping
to run a holiday club with children of missionaries in the area. There will also
be the opportunity to help lead some of their services - teaching them some of
our worship songs. We also hope to learn a lot from them too.
We will have the opportunity to visit the hospital in Kibogora, so Sarah will be
able to see how her sponsorship money contributed to the building.
We will keep you updated about the project!
